Mountains are great places for solar
In a study published in 2019, a Swiss scientist discovered that solar panels don’t just belong in the sunny desert basin. In fact, solar panels mounted correctly on mountains generate just as much energy. Even during the snowy winter, panels still generate power. In fact, they found that light reflected off of snow and the cold air actually boosted efficiency.
Batteries make going off-grid easy
While we typically don’t recommend going off-grid to people who have access to the grid (net metering has lots of benefits), if you live in a remote area without access to power lines, going solar with a battery bank can be a great option. Considering that laying a power line to the nearest electricity grid can cost anywhere from $15,000 to $50,000 per mile, choosing a stand-alone solar system connected to a bank of batteries makes a lot of sense.
Adding a bank of batteries to a solar system solves the daytime/nighttime production problem. During the day, when your system produces more energy than you need, the batteries store the excess energy so you can access it when the sun goes down. You generally want enough batteries to have the capacity to store enough energy for several days.
Roof and Racked Arrays
If your mountain property has acreage, you have the option to install a ground array instead of a roof array. A ground array uses a special rack–kind of like a big shelving unit—to install several vertical layers of solar panels. This means you can install more panels in a smaller footprint.
